We spent most of the day in Sedona. The original plan was to leave Arizona post breakfast so we could head to Hoover Dam and then reach California by the end of the day ... unrealistic, were we?!!! Yess and one big reason for that is irresistible Sedona! You need at least 1/2 a day (unless you are doing a copter ride and some other tours people usually take) to check out those beautiful red rocks and the local artifacts.
So, a quick tour around the bell rock, a few drives up and down the road admiring the different red rock shapes and formations, tons of pictures, trip to some gift shops for souvenirs and it was 2pm already. Thanks to Nitika, we avoided a food stop, we had plenty of food packed from OK! We scrapped the Hoover Dam plan and headed straight to Ca-Li-Fornia!
We touched the CA border at 7pm local time and very ambitiously started driving towards home. We picked Hwy 99 going North, it was 12am and we had just reached Bakersfield. We still had a good 3-4 hours to go. Also, Madhav thought we shouldn't miss the beautiful San Luis Reservoir that connects you to Route 101. So, we stopped in Delano for the night.
Day 7 - Saturday 5/21/2011
We left Delano around 8am and our only stop for the day would be near Tulare on Hwy 99 at the Bravo Cheese Farms. A good discovery, you can't miss it on Hwy 99, it's a restaurant and a marketplace, we had good breakfast and I picked up some locally produced goods for the pantry!
Then came the San Luis Reservoir drive which is near Old Gilroy - breathtaking views along the reservoir, a must see! We then drove straight into Gilroy and were welcomed by the strong smell of gaaah-lic, you know you are in Gilroy when that happens :) We stopped in a local market for some vegetables, some flavored garlic (of course) and then it was the final home-stretch!
It was HOME sweet HOME around 3pm, unloaded, freshened up and we already had a welcome dinner invite from Madhav's cousin :)
