Zante Pizza

Thanks to my friend Ting for discovering this Indian pizzeria in SF's Bernal Heights neighborhood. It's about a mile from the BART on 24th/Mission. Their Indian pizza is flavorful and DELICIOUS, it's topped with eggplant, spinach, spring onions, cilantro, loads of garlic, ginger, cauliflower and cheese of course. You can order a full pizza in different sizes or just a slice and it's served with the green and sweet chutneys.

Tandoori Chicken Pizza - also very delicious, so I was told :)

I would definitely go back here for the pizza and ONLY for the pizza. The rest of the food including the "chai" was disappointing. We sampled the sag paneer and garlic naan and both were below average!

Komala Vilas

A late long-weekend morning, hunger strikes and we decided to go to Komala Vilas. I have heard a lot about their weekend "meals" (not buffet!) so it was time to try it out. You can expect the traditional kalyana-saapadu (wedding feast) style sit-down service, sambhar served from a steel bucket, lot of noise and a long line outside :)

On our meals this Saturday: keerai kootu, french-cut beans podi potta poriyal, mullangi sambhar, lemon rasam (never seen a yellow color rasam...yummm!), rice and appalam (of course!) and semiya payasam - all for around $10. Sorry but it's tough to translate all that!! The food is very simple (at least when we went last Saturday) but extremely delicious, next only to moms' cooking!

Viks Chaat Corner

I live in Miami so needless to say I miss eating good chaat. On my recent trip to the Bay Area we visited Viks Chaat in Berkeley. Viks is  a “well maintained” Indian grocery market that opens into a trendy cafe-style restaurant. Viks is a family-run business that started out as a small grocery store in a warehouse a couple of decades back and has grown leaps and bounds through the years.

Apart from chaat, Viks also serves dosa/idli, biryani, different kinds of kababs and tons of Indian sweets  – a good looking and tasty “petha” after a long time – slurp!!! So, it could really be your “one stop shop” for Indian snacks, dinner and groceries!
